~ A Grim Tale of Murder, Politics, and Spoon Addiction ~

Book Two of The Wellborn Conspiracy

April 2010

Beaches. Sunny walks in the country. A touch of romance. What could be more peaceful than a summer holiday in the Maritimes in 1887? A battlefield, maybe? That's what Elliott Graven and Paisley DeLoup think after a few days of bombs, assassination attempts, and political campaigning. And then there was the vegetarianism... When a project hosted by Alexander Graham Bell threatens to provoke an international crisis that could embroil them all in a real war, Elliott and Paisley begin to wish they'd chosen the Great Lakes instead of Baddeck for their holidays. This kind of thing never happened in Kingston... Submarines. Spoons. Werebeasties. It would make for interesting reading in their letters home, at any rate. Though, on second thoughts, best not to. It would only worry their parents.

"Paul Marlowe’s style of humor is reminiscent of Neil Gaiman’s lighter works... if you enjoy dry wit, Victoriana/steampunk elements, and plucky teenagers saving the world, you’ll probably like Knights of the Sea. It’s an tale of high adventure that takes a humorous look at… well, pretty much everything, from politics to romance to lycanthropy. Give it a shot if you liked Stardust or Good Omens."

"...The main appeal of Marlowe's writing is the constant thread of offbeat humour in well-written prose... blessed with some dark undertones, [Knights of the Sea] is generally fun stuff. It is a fairly light and laugh-inducing read, with odd, likeable characters and settings.." - Craig Pinhey, Telegraph-Journal

"...the novel has multiple compelling features. It is a fast-paced blend of action-adventure, fantasy and historical novel, with the added elements of erudition, humour and wit. Marlowe's style is reminiscent of 19th century literature, yet timeless enough for a 21st century reader to grasp... Subtly and cleverly, author Paul Marlowe educates readers about the politics and preoccupations of late 19th century Canada."
-Ruth Latta, CM Magazine
