Marlowe lives in New Brunswick. He found the job description for 'writer' attractive, since it didn't
include the terms 'team player', 'consensus', or 'fast-paced' anywhere. He has discovered,
however, that there's a lot of unpaid overtime to put in. If asked to describe his writing, Marlowe would use phrases like ‘gritty and realistic’ to convey exactly the sort of thing that his writing usually isn’t. Unlike some critics, though, he doesn’t feel that these two words are necessarily synonymous (except at the beach, or when eating insufficiently-washed asparagus). Also, it's good to bring up these terms to get the clichés out of the system so that it’s possible to talk some sense. ‘Unflinching’ is another good example. How often have we heard a novel described as “an unflinching look at…[insert topic]” In point of fact, Marlowe flinches quite regularly, at least when he hears the English language being heartlessly mangled on the radio. He still tries to listen from time to time, but remembers Jurgen Gothe, Lister Sinclair, Danielle Charbonneau, and Andrea Ratuski, and sighs at what CBC management has wrought. Someday there will be a reckoning. He hopes. You can contact him via this link. |
