For an insight into my approach to writing, consider two writers I admire: George Orwell and PG Wodehouse. Like oil and water, you think? They are different, surely; one serious and analytical as a judge, the other frivolous and playful. What they share is a love of language, a precision with words, an aversion to pretension and hypocrisy, as well as a belief in the value and possibility of ordinary human decency. Neither allowed their intellects to become enslaved to the ideologies -- political, aesthetic, psychological -- behind whose banners so many of their contemporaries fell in with uncritical support. |
